As one of the Big Four of Kokugakusya (Japanese Nativists) in Edo period, Kamo no Mabuchi's Fukko Kokugaku (Japanese Classical National Learning) is regarded as the first strict and systematic theory of Kokugaku in thought history of Japan. In the thesis, we attempt to trace back to the origin of Fukko Kokugaku by close-reading Mabuchi's main works relevant to such unique learning, and study his thoughts from the Sino-Japanese perspectives. We employ the methods of comparative literature, e.g., influence study or parallel study, to exhibit how Mabuchi not only discovers the potentials of Japanese culture, i.e., the "native heart of Japan", but also transplants the Chinese knowledge, i.e., the "alien heart of China" into Japan so as to create the whole body of his National Learning. We carry on the research from three angles:language, textual criticism and thought of ancient Way. The goal is to analyze the mechanisms of Fukko Kokugaku constituted by both local and foreign cultures in a harmonious way.
