A Study On The Production Of Short Fiction Film

Short Film, which varies in both genres and motives, is an important and independent art form. We consider a short film to be one of 30 minutes or less. Because of its low production cost and short production cycle, short film is easy to produce. Looking back into the film history, short film didn't have its own right as an art form until its importance and independence was discovered and emphasized. In early times, the mainstream of short film was almost for entertainment or education, accompanied by experimental film for artistic breakthrough, documentary film to present social problems and other diversified types. In late 1950s, short fiction film's modern period began. Their purpose, however, was to help the filmmakers to gain the admittance of the industry and to further enter the area of long film. So these films did not consciously explore the specific characters which only belong to short films, either in artistic style or in narration. Those which understood the specific aesthetics styles of short films could be named Modern Short Films. These films were not only a promotional way for big events, but also a chance providing filmmakers with opportunities to explore and practice the artistic specialty of shot films.Based on the producing principles of normal short fiction films, using outstanding examples, this paper studies the narrative skills, characterizations and theme constructions of short films. Short fiction films have simpler plots structure than long films and less constrained expression styles and more tended to use one-act or two-act structures. Through balancing causalities and choices, consistencies and contrasts, and simplicities and depths, short films created various effects, including coincidences, surprises and also immortalities. Basically, the main characters of short films are no more than four, among which only one or two with clear personality were emphasized. Combined with different theme constructions which included symbolization, repetition and contrast, the central theme was raised to a high level.
