The Mural painting has a long standing of history, and is used for expressing emotion as the earliest form of art through the human history. Starting from the cave painting in the ancient times, the Mural painting has gone through a great change in the endless flow of history. The Mural has been growing in the basis of Humanities spirit in different culture, either western or eastern, continuously within various flourishing and vicissitudes. As it were, the connotation of Mural cannot do without the dependence on the connotation of culture. Both the traditional mural and the modern mural rely on their own cultural spirits, which relates to the features of region, period, audiences, etc. Different with the modern mural relying on the modern architecture, most of the traditional mural is religion painting or history painting which is servicing for the governance. This kind of mural was mostly painted on the wall of temple (e.g. the Mural of Fahai Temple), or on the wall of cave (e.g. the Mural of Mogao caves). For this reason, the traditional Mural does not have a tight relying on the architecture, but the modern Mural does. While the modern Mural is inheriting the material quality, skills and cultures form traditional Mural, it is also influenced by the fast development of society. Following the various change of social function, the modern Mural has been reflecting the diversification of architecture and function, etc. In other word, as a part of Public Art, the modern Mural has been widely divergent with the traditional Mural in the environment of modern architecture. Overall, the modern Mural has a nature of public environmental art, and highly relies on the modern architecture environment.In this article, by clueing the context inheritability of Mural, by setting the architecture environment of Mural, by starting from the material quality, colouration, picture composition, social function, etc. of Mural, we tried to analyse the art of Mural in modern architecture environment, and discuss the interactional dialectical relationship between Mural and modern architecture.There are four chapters in the main body of this article. Firstly, by comparing the traditional Mural with modern Mural from the forms of features, we will analyse the characteristics of modern Mural in the modern architecture environment leading with the beauty appreciation, form characteristics and artistic characteristics. Secondly, we will briefly explain the context inheritability of Mural, especially with the definition of'contextuality'and the Chinese traditional Mural. In the second paragraph of this chapter, we will use the social functionality, colouration and painting skills as the entry points to explain the contextuality of culture. Thirdly, as the key point, the context inheritability of modern Mural will be discussed and analysed detailed within the architecture environment. As the spirit of the Mural art, its cultural connotation is the basis ground of Mural art. It is also specially reflected on the characteristics of Mural art, e.g. the selection of subject, the selection of materials, the changes of social function, the using of colouration and the relation with architectural space, etc. After this, by choosing examples from four areas of these characteristics, we will discuss and analyse the context inheritability of modern Mural. Lastly, we will briefly conclude the development of Mural, especially with Chinese modern Mural, and make an expectation on the development of Mural in the modern architecture environment.On the whole of this article, through the analysis about the characteristics of modern Mural art, like selection of materials, colouration and social function, etc., we try to catch the keys of Mural art in the background of modern architecture environment, and to find out the interactional dialectical relationship between the modern Mural and modern architecture environment, which will help us to catch the key points of Mural art further deeply. And the detailed discussion and analysis on the cultural context inheritability of Mural art is also an innovation of the research in this area.
