The research on modern mural creation has been exploring mural materials inmany aspects. This may reflect the artistic conception of ’mass fine arts’ in moderntimes and is certainly of progressive significance. However, numerous murallanguages and modeling means on buildings go far from traditional mural art in itspainting nature. Too much concern has been shown to the decorative role that muralsplay in architectural environment. Mural works made of various materials are onlyreduced to the ornaments and appendages of architectural ’wall’. Therefore, mural artloses its aesthetic value on its own. Questions how modern mural painting can find’wall’ and architectural environment for its existence in the new era and how muralartists orient their mural creation so as to inherit the traditional art call for furtherconsideration. Undoubtedly, there would be no prospect for the development ofChinese mural art without the research on modern mural painting. This paper aims atinterpreting the traditional mural painting and analyze the features and styles oftypically contemporary mural painting in an attempt to clarify the artistic charm ofmodern mural painting in its individualization of artistic expression andpopularization of subjects. It also sorts out the special spatial styles of architectural’wall’ and thus gain a rational understanding of the interactive relationship between’painting’ and ’wall’.This paper consists of five parts. The first part explains the reasons for choosingthis subject and illustrates the current situations in which modern mural painting isconfronted with great controversy. The second part elaborates the features in thecreation of mural painting. The third part starts with an argument on the relationshipbetween mural painting styles and modern architecture, and continues to summarizetwo mural painting styles and their uses in architectural environment. It is argued thatthe primary goal of mural painting, as public art, is to enhance the public’s aestheticinterest and visual quality and that mural works should beautify the environment byintegrating not only with the spatial styles but also with societal and cultural concepts. The fourth part states that contemporary spiritual concepts and cultural implicationsare essential contents to which mural artists can orient themselves. In this part, theassumption of two creation methods is put forward. The fifth part argues for thenecessity of dialogues on the basis of equality about painting and wall, and that artistsshould possess their own spiritual ’wall’.This paper carries out a dialectic study of the two elements:’painting’ and’wall’, in mural painting. Despite much controversy over painting and wall, I arguethat an artist should establish his own ’wall’ in modern mural creation and use hisown creative spirit to exert his power of expression.
