Citizen Participation Of Urban Inhabitant: Structure And Measurement

Citizen participation is a hot topic of western community psychology, whereas its research in the background of community psychology remains infrequent. The conduction of both theoretical and empirical research to Citizen Participation issues in the field of community psychology, not only helps to bridge the gap between domestic and western countries, but also contributes to promote the construction of the harmonious community. Based on the Systematically combing Western literature of citizen participation, combined with the actual situation of China's reform and opening up community life, this research try to figure out the operational definition of citizen participation, formulate a Citizen Participation scale with the subject of city residents, according to personal comprehension of the concept and structure of Citizen Participation; This research also makes a probe on the current situation and possible influencing factors of Chinese city residents'Citizen Participation.The operational definition of citizen participation in this research is:compulsory social behavior of community residents who participate positively in all kinds of affairs related to survival and development of community. The concept contains three factors, namely, democratic decision-making participation, neighborhood support participation, public service participation, the three factors are all logically related.The dimension of city residents'Citizen Participation was confirmed by qualitative analysis, exploratory and confirmatory factory analysis. According to the above dimension, Citizen Participation Scale of China Resident has twenty-two items, "democratic decision-making participation" includes six items, "neighborhood support participation" includes five items, "public service participation" includes five items, "lying subscale" includes six items. After being tested in terms of reliability and validity, the main indexes of reliability and validity have met the psychometric requirements. The results show the internal consistency reliability is 0.854, each subscale's internal consistency reliability is between 0.772 and 0.678; Half-split reliability is 0.767, each subscale's half-split reliability is between 0.775 and 0.686; Two-week-test-retest reliability is 0.718, each subscale's two-week-test-retest reliability is between 0.754 and 0.653; the distribution of the correlation matrix between each subscale reach significant level between 0.649 and 0.562;the correlation coefficient between each subscale and total scale is between 0.865 and 0.797;the correlation coefficient between Citizen Participation Scale of China Resident and Citizen Participation Scale of Social Capital Scale is 0.489.Therefore, the discriminant validity convergent validity and criterion validity of CPSCR are proved to be valid.This research has set up the Norm Standard within a certain scope. The T score were used, with the mean score being 50, and the standard deviation being 10. The scores above 60 were considered high and low if below 40. The typical features of discretion groups are described.This research discusses the current situation and influencing factors of 1068 city residents with the help of CPSCR. The results show the score of scale and subscale is above the middle level. From the perspective of the scale, the choice tendency is "basic agreed". CP of city residents has significant difference on variables of age, education, length of residency, belief and the number of children, through no significant gender difference is found. The results of regression analysis show that five variables enter regression equation and have significant direct effects on CP. They are age, education, the number of children, length of residency, belief, especially length of residency accounts for the most significant predictive power.
