As one of the most distinguished works in the history of Chinese Classic Drama and in the field of literature, The Peony Pavilion used to make extensive echoes in ancient China, and the successful neoteric performances also prove that it still retain the artistic charm which can stir people's enthusiasm in modern society of China and even in the Western countries. The research value of The Peony Pavilion as "drama on the stage" is out of question, and it should not be regarded as a mere literary text.At the same time, as one of the world's three ancient dramas, Chinese Classic Drama always attracts attention from many fields because of the profound history and culture it bears and the beautiful language and unique way of stage performance it adopts. And the "reversal" and "displacement" phenomena appear in the process of drama's modernization push the different unique expression technique of Chinese drama and Western drama, especially the narrative ways, into researchers'scope of vision. It is inevitable that the different narrative ways between Chinese drama and the Western drama will affect their ways of emotion construction respectively. And as one of the most important representatives of Tang Xianzu's theory of "emotion-centered", the combination of the abundant emotion and unique narrative ways in The Peony Pavilion will definitely affect the translators'text emotion construction in the process of translating.Therefore, in order to resolve or to alleviate the Western readers'(viewers') difficulties in understanding, appreciation and emotional acceptance which caused by the different narrative style and ways of stage performance between the Western drama and Chinese drama, to reproduce feature as "emotion's first", to promote Chinese drama culture, this thesis will give a comparatively systematic study of the English translation of The Peony Pavilion from the perspective of narratology.This thesis consists of six chapters. Chapter One gives a general introduction of the study of The Peony Pavilion, including the background and significance of the study, the research questions and methods of the thesis. Chapter Two is the literature review on the studies of narratology and the different narrative ways between Chinese and Western drama. Chapter Three analyzes the emotion construction in translation when there is focalization trespassing under author's interference. Chapter Four explores the emotion construction in translation when the focalization and voice are separated. Chapter Five is devoted to studying the emotion construction when the translators'focalization intervent the lyricized plot. Chapter Six comes the conclusion.The Chinese Classic Drama is the treasure of Chinese civilization. The tasks entrusted to us to maintain and develop it are heavy and there is a long way ahead. With this thesis, the author hopes to find a new perspective for the translations and studies of the Chinese Classic Drama, thus making it possible to continuously spread to every corner of the world by gaining more understanding, appreciation and passion.
