A Study On Dong Qiusi's Translation

Dong Qiusi is one of the influential translators in the Chinese translation history. Like other influential translators, Dong Qiusi has made great contributions to the Chinese translation cause. He has translated many foreign literary works. He has also made great contributions to the establishment of Chinese translation theories and Chinese translation criticism.With Andre Lefevere's ideology as the theoretical framework, in this thesis, the social ideology at that time and the thought of Dong Qiusi have been illustrated, then Dong Qiusi's selection of translation texts at different stages including those subjects about revolutionary thoughts, wars, realistic novels, as well as those subjects about biographies and children's storie has been analyzed. And the foreignizing translation strategy adopted by Dong Qiusi to follow the original language structures and to retain the original cultural features has been explored. Through analysis, it is found that the social ideology and Dong Qiusi's thought have much influence on him in choosing the source texts of literary works and adpoting the foreignizing translation strategy.Though Dong Qiusi has made great contributions to the Chinese translation cause, there are still some limitations in his translation theory and his translation practice. Generally speaking, his contributions overwhelm his limitations. His translation theory has palyed an important role in the establishment of Chinese translation theories.To sum up, this study aims to discover the synchronic significance of translation through studying the diachronic significance of the translator's ideological orientation and to offer some reference for further studies in translation theories and translation practices through the study of Dong Qiusi's translation from the perspective of ideology.
