In the past few years, the novel Harry Potter series has became popular throughout the world; its author J. K. Rowling has been called the mother of Harry Potter's. This novel not only be welcomed by the English little readers, but also liked by many different ages of children and even the adults from all over the world. Harry Potter and the Deathly Hollows is the last volume of this series, and it marks the end of this series novel. The characters are vivid in this novel, and the plot of this story is fantastic, while the Chinese readers enjoy its characters and plot through the wonderful and perfect Chinese translation of this book.Owning to the popularity of the novel Harry Potter around the world, the relative academic researches on the novel of Harry Potter has been gradually carried out. The research on its translation has plays a very important part in it. The complex characters; magic environment of the plot and the countless social and culture elements set difficulties for the translation work.Translation oriented text analysis is a hot topic in present translation research field. It refers to the cognition of translation built on the basic of text analysis. The translators'translation oriented text analysis can help the translator understand the original text correctly; find the more appropriate translation method; and carried out the most suitable translation activities. In this thesis, the author intends to analyze the Chinese translation of Harry Potter and the Deathly Hollows from the aspect of translation oriented text analysis, and discusses how this theory works out and instructs the translator to do the translation activities.This paper chooses the simplified version of Harry Potter and the Deathly Hollows published by the People's Literature Publishing House. The whole thesis can be divided into six parts.First part is the introduction part, the author first make a general introduction of many different kinds of academic researches based on the popularity of Harry Potter. It mainly introduces the research situation of Harry Potter both abroad and in China; the research purpose; the research method and the structure of the whole thesis.The next four following chapters are the main body of this thesis. The first chapter is the introduction of the translation theory used in this paper—translation oriented text analysis. This chapter states the definition of text and text analysis, function of text analysis, and introduce from the development of text analysis to the theory adopted in this paper. This paper adopts the seven standards of a communicative text put forward by the text linguists De Beaugrande and Dressler in 1981. The seven standards are cohesion, coherence, intentionality, acceptability, informationality, situationality and intertextuality. All of them should be taken into consideration in the course of translation.Chapter two is the introduction of the novel Harry Potter and the Deathly Hollows. It introduced the background of the author and translator of the novel; as well as the language features of source text and target text.Chapter three using the seven standards put forward by De Beaugrand and Dressler to make a detail analysis of the translated version of this novel. This chapter can be divided into seven parts, a lot of examples will be provided from the original text and target text in order to make the comparison from every standard. From these we can see how the translation oriented text analysis instructs the translation activities of the translators.The fourth chapter illustrates the inner relationship of the seven standards and how they work together to achieve the final translation work. The shortage of any standard will make the translator misunderstand the original meaning of the original text and make the mistranslations. Though it has some imprecise parts, the whole translation work brings reading pleasure to the Chinese readers.Last chapter is the conclusion part; it makes a final conclusion to the whole thesis, and makes a further statement of the research limitations and research potentials of the translation oriented text analysis.
