The Harry Potter Series are extremely popular during the past decade. Since the release of the first novel, Harry Potter has became a name which has gain immense popularity and commercial success worldwide, spawning films, video games, and a wealth of other items. Readers of different age groups and countries are attracted to this boy and his story, being amused by the magic world the author has created. In China, the series also achieved great success. Because of the popularity of Harry Potter Series throughout the world, many studies have been carried out to search for the reason behind its success. Most of the studies, however, take the literary, religious or marketing perspectives. Few of them have studied it from the perspective of text translation analysis. This thesis is focused on approaching translation from the perspective of text analysis. It aims at analyzing, and interpreting some issues concerning textual translation by employing the method of text translation analysis put forward by Robert De Beaugrand & Wolfgang Dressler in 1981, analyzing the seven standards (cohesion, coherence, intentionality, acceptability, informativity, situationality and intertextuality) used in the Chinese version of Harry Potter Series by People's Literature Publishing House.Chapter 1 introduces the present Chinese versions of the Harry Potter Series, related studies of the Harry Potter Series and the methods used in the paper.Chapter 2 gives a brief introduction of J.K. Rowling and her Harry Potter series. This chapter first introduces the author, the mother of the great work, and her ideas of creating a magic world. Then it moves on to introducing the work, which is different from the modern novels as a fantasy one. And the Chinese version must contain the fantastic effect when translated into Chinese.Chapter 3 mainly focuses on the method, text translation analysis, adopted in this paper, from the origin of text analysis to the specific approach used in the thesis. As to the Chinese version of the Harry Potter Series, the translators pay attention to the elements both inside and outside the text. Their translation reflects the requirements of text translation analysis. The thought put forward by Robert De Beaugrand & Wolfgang Dressler in 1981 is adopted. They believe that a typical text should have the following features:cohesion, coherence, intentionality, acceptability, informativity, situationality and intertextuality.Chapter 4 is divided into seven parts from the angle of seven standards of a typical text. It explores how the Chinese Translators of Harry Potter Series achieved the final Chinese translation with the seven standards. And many examples will be given from both the original novel and mainland Chinese version. And also some improper translations of Harry Potter Series are also introduced. Though the Chinese translation is not a perfect version, it still brings the pleasure to Chinese readers as the original series of Harry Potter did to the native readers. And the last part is the conclusion. The writer summarizes the research significance of this paper and limitations of the study and gives some suggestions for further research.
