Modern military industry began in the 1960s. Yunnan was located in the border, was the southwestern door to the foreign invasion, and the development of the modern military industry fell behind the inland areas. It began to develop in the late 19th and early 20th century, but even more slowly. However, in 50 years Yunnan's modern military had gradually developed from nothing to something, and the level of technology had improved continuously. Especially during the anti-Japanese war, in Yunnan the military industrial science and technology had made remarkable progress, and had important influences on Yunnan's political, economic, military, science and technology.Along with the Qing government's three reforms and two stages in the late Qing dynasty, Yunnan's military industry began to rise, during the period of the early Republic of China, Yunnan's military industry was controlled by the separatist forces of local warlords in Yunnan, until the period of the Republic of China, Yunnan local government presided over the military industrial production. On July 7,1937, the Japanese invaders deliberately created the Marco Polo Bridge Incident, and launched an aggressive war. Chinese people were entirely against the common enemy, with the KMT-CPC cooperation and solidarity launched a comprehensive anti-Japanese war. Ordnance production got into the war situation. Arsenals were moved westward, and KMT government began to establish the rear ordnance base. In 1937 the coastal and inland enterprises began to move, the KMT's military industries also began to move southwestward, Military Department of War Industry of KMT government decided to relocate the military optical equipment factory of Nanjing from Chongqing to Kunming, and establish other four new arsenals in Kunming. Not only did military enterprises bring more advanced industrial facilities and science and technology, but also trained a large number of local skilled workers and professional technical and management personnel, meanwhile played an active role in promoting the economic development of Yunnan and social progress.China's military optical industry originated in the early 1930s, the No.53 arsenal of Military Department of War Industry had been surviving and developing in the war, it manufactured military supplies with technology of western European. On April 29,1939, No.22 arsenal successfully manufactured China's the first 6×30 military binoculars at Willow Dam in Kunming. which began the production of military optical instruments. During the anti-Japanese war, it manufactured the reflection measurement of 80cm telescope, the US-Turk-style mortar sight, the Bronte-style mortar sight, the pentagon measuring telescope, quadrant, compass and so on, which made great contribution to the anti-Japanese war.To summarize the experience in the development of Yunnan's military industry during the period of war, the most fundamental one was to seize the opportunity. During the war period, the KMT Government enhanced the development of southwest area; Yunnan local authorities seized this historic opportunity, which was the important experience for the development of Yunnan military industry. Yunnan has been seized the opportunity in history to develop its own successfully. At present it is facing another golden opportunity for the development of Yunnan, as long as we firmly seize the opportunity, we believe that Yunnan is able to recreate new and brilliant achievement in the new century.
