Based on the predecessors' research findings and historical data, taking the shipping between Fujian and Taiwan from 1842 to 1895 as a research object, the thesis makes more thorough and systematic investigation and analysis of the shipping change, development and characteristics between Fujian and Taiwan from 1842 to 1895. After the opium war, with foreign capitalistic shipping invading, the traditional shipping of Fujian and Taiwan underwent unprecedented upheavals. Foreign countries won an overwhelming advantage in shipping by means of their privilege, abundant funds and convenient ship transportation. However, for various reasons, Chinese traditional sailing transportation still vigorously survived in such specific historical environment between the Taiwan straits and even continued to play an important role in enhancing the population flow and logistics. Meanwhile, under the stimulus of external conditions, officials in Qing dynasty and merchants of the Taiwan straits begins to establish modern shipping industry, which not only helped advance trade and commerce in Fujian and Taiwan areas but also encouraged the emergence of modern shipbuilding industry, telecommunication and postal service and the like. After Sino-Japanese War of 1894, Taiwan was colonized by Japan. Since then, the shipping and trade of Taiwan and the Penghu islands were entirely monopolized and controlled by the Japanese rulers. In short, the shipping between Fujian and Taiwan from 1842 to 1895 saw a period of unrest with humiliation and rise in self-reliance.
