| English is the most widely used language in the world today. Because of the colonial expansion of Britain, it is unavoidable for the emergence of various regional varieties, among which BrE and AmE are the two main varieties. After World War II, AmE spread to the whole world by politics, economy, culture and immigration. AmE will be very likely to replace BrE as a world lingua franca. The global expansion of AmE causes great confusion to English teaching all over the world and China is no exception. With the normalization of Sino-US relations and the increasing Sino-American exchanges in politics, economy and culture, there has been enthusiasm of studying AmE in China. The influence of AmE in China is increasing, which brings enormous challenges to Chinese theorists, teachers and students. The global spread of AmE will inevitably have an increasing impact on English teaching in China, and its influence will become more and more obvious as time goes by. Under such circumstances, how to reform English teaching model in China is the key issue to be solved in the thesis.This thesis analyzes the influence of AmE on TEFL in China, finds out some problems in TEFL, explores solutions to TEFL from six aspects:language selection, curriculum designing, teaching materials selection, teaching innovation, teacher training and reform of teaching assessment, and proves that the acceptability and advantage of implementing double standards in TEFL. The conclusion of the study is that English teaching in China should adopt American English-dominated both-variety-coexistent teaching model. The author thinks English teaching should strengthen the theoretical innovation, promote the reform of teaching methods, increase the chance of contacting with BrE and AmE, need to be mindful of confusion caused by various English varieties when paying attention to the influence of cultural difference on English teaching, strengthen teacher training so that they can present one or more standard varieties clearly. |
