| The traditional Chinese folk art has great similarity to the modern design in "form" and "constitution": the composition and construction of the geometric shape, abstract lines, and graphic elements as the visual language to express art concepts.Belonging to the different art and cultural systems, Western modern design and Chinese folk art develop independently in the history of visual art. However, these two different cultural forms exhibit similar patterns in artistic expression. Studying the details of this "intersection" of the two art forms will make it possible to direct the drawing the outlines of traditional Chinese art and the exploration of Chinese native art of unique forms. The "constitutiveness" in paper-cut art is similar to that of the modern Western posters, however with subtle difference. The value for a professional in visual communication lies in pattern analysis for studying the folk culture. The current research in this thesis is different from the symbols and elements analysis as the traditional way. In order to explore the unique visual rules of the traditional Chinese folk culture, it requires the detailed understanding of"combination law "and "art expression" beyond viewing it as a symbol language. In short, the paper-cut art has both its uniqueness and relevance to the western contemporary poster art, which can provides the contemporary Chinese art with valuable nutrition.This thesis tries to creatively dissect the paper-cut art pattern in the perspective of western design schematic: to decode, categorize, and consolidate its display language and implied principles. Furthermore, this study explores to reformulate the essence of paper-cut art pattern with modern ideas and aesthetics. By disposing of the restraint of traditional aesthetic appearance, it seeks to examine the underlying characteristics and laws of the plane constitution and find junction of the Western and Chinese cultures. This study promises to provide a deeper understanding of Chinese folk art in a rational language, as well as an interesting vision for studying contemporary graphic design within the system of Chinese culture. |
