Analysis Of The Application Of Shanxi Folk Paper-cutting In Graphic Design

Paper-cutting art in Shanxi Province enjoys a long history and is distinct in its own way. Being easy in creation and simple in patterns, paper-cutting products bear profound cultural meanings and show great artistic charm. Paper-cutting art was created and then has been existing in a specific cultural background which embodies paper-cutting the equally specific auspicious meanings. Generally speaking, paper-cutting has been considered as a way of emotion expression and also the wisdom crystal of the folk.Under the context of the world culture being increasingly diversifying, the graphic design in China is faced with deep impacts from the outside. As a result, the graphic design in China has already blindly followed the foreign elements, losing its own features.Considering the close ties between the paper-cutting art in Shanxi Province and the graphic design in the modern times, such as their shared cultural connotations inside and the patterns outside, it is of huge significance to extract the biggest artistic features in the paper-cutting art and then to apply those features into the modern graphic design. In this way,the modern graphic design will become a combination of rich traditional culture and obvious characteristics of the modern times. With that being said, the artistic features of paper-cutting art and the smart ways of application in the modern graphic design are the main parts of this paper.This paper consists of six chapters in all. Chapter One is the preface which gives a brief introduction of the background, aims and methodologies of this writing project.Chapter Two focuses on the artistic features of paper-cutting art, including features in the external patters, cultural connotations, color design and theme choice. Chapter Three aims at the application of those artistic features in various aspects in the modern graphic design,including the design of pictures, icons, packages and illustrations. Chapter Four is about the practices in graphic design, such as the thinking thoughts, the analysis and the application aspects. Chapter Five and Chapter Six are the conclusion part which contains a brief summary of the writing project and also bears some expectations for further combination of the paper-cutting art and the modern graphic design in the future.
