Comparative Research On The Graphic Features Of Folk Paper Cutting Between The South And The North Of China

In this thesis, the graphic features of paper cutting in China were compared from visual communication design point of view, and the inspiration from that and its application in modern graphic design were presented.Graphics is the core element of art modeling system in paper cutting. Its characteristic is the graphic feature shaped by the themes, modeling styles and expression methods. As one of the traditional graphic, the graphic of paper cutting inherited the comparatively pure motivations, methods and ideas in creating. Further it became the vision coding of national cultures after sorting, evolution and inherit age. The basic commonplaces formed by the acceptance of the cultures are employed to decode them so that the feelings, consciousness of cultures, geographical area characters, folk-customs, the differences and identity can be understood.In order to research the graphic features in folk paper cutting, the geographical areas, features of themes and its causes, styles of modeling and ways of expression must be taken into consideration. The comparison between the north and the south of China is mainly based on the themes and the graphic expression and focused on the geographical areas, history and humanity aspects.1. Comparison of themesThe choice of themes, to some extend, reflects the motivation of the authors, and the creation of graphic in paper cutting is depended on its theme. Therefore the features of the graphic are determined by their themes.The themes of folk paper cutting are divided into four categories, by comparing of the features, tendency and patterns of the themes, the author tries to find out the difference and identity existed in the cultures in north China and south China, based on that, to further explore the styles and expression methods in different areas.2. Comparison in ways of graphic expressionsComparison in characters of themes, styles of modeling, and methods of expressing is presented, and based on the comparison, generation and summarization is also presented.3. The impact of graphic features in folk paper cutting on modern graphic designBased on the research on the impact put by the paper cutting on modern graphic design, we believe that we can use it as reference in design especially in theme choice and graphic creation and theme expressing.It must be pointed out that the conclusion based on the analysis of the information collected from different areas reflects somewhat general tendency, not a specific case.The research aimed at interpreting the external forms of folk paper cutting from different vision angles so that we can explore the graphic elements, creation platform and its application in the modern graphic design.
