Charlotte's Web is the most popular one of E. B. White's three novels for children. The book is famous for its special language style and its gripping story. Attention should be given to the fact that lots of researchers realized the specialty of language style in Charlotte's Web, but they did not research on it in detail. At the same time there is no one giving their attention to story patterns in Charlotte's Web. Hence, researching on language style and story patterns of Charlotte's Web is worthwhile and it will fill the gap of textual research on Charlotte's Web.This thesis is divided into five parts: introduction, three chapters and conclusion. The introduction part includes a brief introduction to E. B. White and his work Charlotte's Web. The review of current research on Charlotte's Web and the significance of this thesis are also introduced in this part. The main part of this thesis has three chapters. The main topic of Chapter One is language style of Charlotte's Web. In Chapter Two, story patterns in Charlotte's Web will be introduced, and Chapter Three is about relationship between language style, story patterns and improving children's reading ability.Diction, sentence structure and characters'language are three sections which complete the whole Chapter One. In the section of diction in Charlotte's Web, features of the usage of verbs, nouns, adjectives, pronouns and prepositions are introduced. These features include White's preference to using verbs and nouns than to adjectives, and White's skillful choice to prepositions and pronouns. These features of diction make the language of Charlotte's Web simple and humorous. In addition, the parallel structure of sentences and features of characters'language in the novel are analyzed. In Chapter Two, repetition of basic story patterns and variations in the text are introduced. In Charlotte's Web, stories are organized by three types of basic story patterns: allegory, the story of the winning of the weak side and the story of being at home, leaving home and being back home. The repetition of basic story patterns not only organized the stories in the novel but also have some other functions which are also analyzed in the thesis. Moreover, the variations in Charlotte's Web and its functions are the other part of Chapter Two.Chapter Three is about the relationship between language style, story patterns and improving children's reading ability. Because of the analysis in Chapter One and Chapter Two, it is plain to find that the language style and story patterns of Charlotte's Web are closely related to improving children's reading ability. Thus, White's strategies of teaching vocabulary and appreciation of text are concluded in this chapter. The last part of the thesis concludes the language style, story patterns of Charlotte's Web, and their relationship with improving children's reading ability. To sum up, this thesis focuses on language style and story patterns of Charlotte's Web so as to explore the new ground of textual research on Charlotte's Web.
