Ever since the autonomous learning was raised, researchers over the world have paid much attention to its definition and supported theories. It has a great effect not only on students'independence, study awareness, studying efficiency but also on reducing their study burden. However, the research on autonomous learning in grammar teaching is limited, not to mention its application in vocational college. The English level of students in vocational schools is not good, especially their grammar, which plays an important role in listening, speaking, reading and writing.This thesis begins with the conflict between the requirement on grammar teaching and its current situation, and then intends to solve this problem by cultivating the students'autonomous learning ability. The theory of autonomous learning is based on constructivism theory. In the research, the theory of autonomous learning and some related theories are carefully studied in order to check whether autonomous learning can change the actuality of grammar teaching.This article is composed of six parts:1. Preface. It introduces the current status of teaching and learning of English grammar, as well as students'characters and objectives in professional colleges.2. Literature Review. This part includes four subjects. This first includes autonomous learning's definition, features and its necessity in grammar learning; The second part states the main factors and strategies affecting the autonomous learning; The third explains the theories and structures of autonomous learning; at last, it expounds on autonomous learning application of theories, including how to build up students'confidence in grammar learning, how to cultivate their learning interests, how to train students'ability of autonomous learning by metacognitive strategy and how to set up teachers'leading role in teaching the students.3. Research Design: It states the subjects for the researching objective, researching problems, researching target and researching methods.4. Data Collection and Analysis: it includes three subjects. The first is to distribute the questionnaires, collect data and then analyze and discuss. Secondly, it put into practice the autonomous grammar learning in teaching. Thirdly, interview. The last is to evaluate the result.5. Enlightenment of research. It includes the selection of teaching content, how to learn grammar based on context, cultivation of students'ability about autonomous learning in class and the requirements for English teachers. 6. Conclusion.The subjects of the research is the freshmen from two ordinary classes in vocational school: one is the experimental class and the other is the control class. First, a survey is put out to investigate their attitude, level and learning method in grammar learning. Then, the theory of autonomous learning is used in the experimental class by using the metacognitive learning strategy to arouse the students'interest in grammar while the traditional teaching method is applied in control class. After one semester, students'interest and learning efficiency is improved in experimental class. Most students in the experimental class can self-consciously make their study objective, choose their study method, monitor their study process and evaluate their performance. The grade of the experimental class is obviously better than the control class in the grammer test of final semester and A-level English test of Heilongjiang Province. The experiment outcome is recognized by colleagues and students.
