Nowadays, with the rapid development of information society, the update of knowledge becoming faster and faster, the update of science and technology needing less time, lifelong learning has permeated in every field.With the popularization of higher education, the number of students in higher vocational colleges will account for half of the number of higher education, they will become an important force in the future society.Students’ competitiveness and development potential depends on whether they have strong ability of autonomous learning.Cultivate students’ ability of autonomous learning has become the main target of the higher education.At the same time, the development and application of multimedia in the cultivation of students’ autonomous learning ability provides a very good tool.This paper surveys and analyzes the multimedia learning environment, the current situation of higher vocational college students’ autonomous learning, to understand the English autonomous learning ability of students in higher vocational colleges, and research of multimedia of effect on students’ English autonomous learning, the change of the role of teachers under the new teaching mode.In this article, the writer choose 427 sophomore students from six major of her school, in the form of questionnaire and discussion, do a survey of the students English autonomous learning ability in the multimedia environment, including English learning beliefs and attitudes, English learning resources, English learning motivation and the transformation of the English teacher’s role.In addition, the author has carried on an interview to three English teachers, to understand the students’ English learning autonomy under multimedia teaching mode in the eyes of the teachers. And to make out the teacher’s role in the new teaching mode.The survey shows that students have the basic awareness of autonomous learning, but the independent learning ability is generally weak, at the same time, the multimedia teaching model played a significant role in autonomous learning for students.On the basis of the present status, finally, this article puts forward some suggestions, which promote students’ autonomous learning under the multimedia environment English.
