Vocabulary is one of the three essential elements(speech sound, vocabulary and grammar) of a language.It is the basic material of a language. It is of utmost importance to people's communication and language learning. David Wilkins writes in "Linguistics in Language Teaching" that "Without grammar little can be conveyed, without vocabulary nothing can be conveyed."English learners put vocabulary in first place. One's vocabulary is closely related to one's English proficiency. Poor English learners tend to feel that vocabulary is their major obstacle in foreign language learning.It is obvious that they have limited vocabulary. Good English learners can grasp English words with their pronunciations and their meanings. They can also grasp the English words in the context of sentences and in the passages.This paper is mainly about the acquisition of foreign language vocabulary through the combination of explicit meaning of foreign language words from direct notes and incidental vocabulary acquisition from listening, reading in different ways. The combination of the two aspects in the acquisition of foreign language vocabulary is essential, and too much emphasis of either aspect is of no significance to the effective acquisition of foreign language vocabulary. The combination of the two methods in the acquisition of vocabulary will get twice the result with half the effort. By this mehod,English learners can easily and effectively acquire a large vocabulary.This paper explains the theory of Incidental Vocabulary Acquisition. By the experiment in four classes of the same English level, through the comparison of three groups, it's proved by the statistics that the combination of Incidental Vocabulary Acquisition and direct notes to English new words are an effective approach for/English learners to enlarge their vocabulary so as to improve their English proficiency. Therefore, this paper provides a method for effective teaching of vocabulary and at the same time encourages English learners take the effective learning method in their process of learning English words so as to enhance their English proficiency.
