Frank Bridge (1879~1941) was an English composer, violist, conductor and educator. Being a composer, Bridge has broad interests. He produced important music of various genres including chamber, orchestral, piano, organ, songs as well as opera. Bridge experienced the colorful music genres of early 20th century and he has inherited a series of elements from late Romanticism, Impressionism and Expressionism. Having been influenced by various styles, Bridge still demonstrated his own personalities. Of his 13 orchestral works, The Sea created in 1910-1911 was a significant work of summary and exploration before his transformation, won him the greatest fame. This paper choose this work as my study, and mainly do work as follows:This body of this paper consists of three parts. The first part introduces Bridge, his writing career and the relevant circumstances of The Sea. The second part was the core of this paper. This part lays out the structure, melody characteristics and harmonic characteristic and orchestration techniques and analyzes them in details. The third part is based on the analysis of the second part. The author further reviews Bridge's early characteristics and makes a brief objective evaluation of the composer with history and dialectical humanistic reflection. The conclusion part is the author's personal knowledge and thinking.The Sea is a novel, unique and elegant compositions, it reflects deep-rooted tradition and innovation concept of Bridge, which can represents the style of his early writing. Although he was neglected by variety of reasons, yet his spirit of bold innovation has no doubt played an indelible role in promoting the development of 20th century British music, meanwhile, there are many composer ideas of his are still worthwhile to learning and rethinking. On the occasion of 70 anniversary of the death of Bridge, I would like to cherish the memory to a generation of great composer by this article, and expect there are more people to pay attention to him, understand him.
