An Analysis Of Legal English Text Translation From The Perspective Of The Cultural Context

Legal English, as an ESP (English for Specific Purposes), has attracted extensive attention worldwide. With the development of global economy, legal English text translation plays a more important role in international trade and international legal communications. The existent discussion of legal English text translation focuses on the linguistic level such as specific translation methods and selection of the optimal words. Cultural context has not been systematically applied to the study of legal English text translation. Based on the differences between Chinese and western culture, between language culture and institutional culture, etc., complied with the analysis of examples of legal English text translation, the author in this paper discusses how to accurately convey information in legal English text to the Chinese readers. Furthermore, the author explores the influence of cultural context on the legal English text translation and proposes the corresponding translation strategies. This thesis brings the cultural context into the study of the legal English text translation in order to provide some translation strategies based on the cultural context for the legal text translation practioners, which hopefully contributes to the translation of legal English texts.
