The Application Of Context Of Culture In Legal Term Translation

Legal term translation is the most important part in legal translation. Legal termis the manifestation of cultural features involved in a legal system and a nation, whichmakes the meaning of legal term hard to determine. The accurate translation could berealized only if we take context of culture into account. Therefore, the study on theapplication of context of culture in legal term translation is of great theoretical andpractical significance.There is not a unanimous definition of cultural context existing in the field oflinguistics until now. As a general concept, cultural context represents an abstractmodel of human activities, such as literature, social regulation, religious, value, and soon. Based on the theories of context of culture, the thesis conducts an elaborate studyon legal term translation.At the beginning, the thesis systematically describes the previous studies on legaltranslation and legal term translation at home and abroad. And then the thesis goes tointroduce the theoretical foundation, exploring the notion, function, and characteristicof context and cultural context. By using a lot of particular examples, the thesisexplains how the meaning of legal terms shifts by the influence of cultural context,further proposing the translation requirements for legal term based on context ofculture, which includes complying with the characteristics of legal language, adaptingto the habit of legal lexical expression, meeting the cultural background of targetlanguage, seeking to meaning equivalence, and creating a new legal term. Throughthe study, the thesis comes to the conclusion that the translated legal text becomesmore accurate when context of culture is applied in legal term translation.
