A Study On Image Cohesion In Relegation Poetry

With the development of Chinese culture in the world, more and more western scholars become interested in Chinese poetry. Chinese classical poetry is rich in content, various in forms ,well-knit in structure and far-reaching in significance. The concise expression of ancient Chinese poetry makes the surface structure of poetry seem to be lack of signs of cohesion. However, it has no effect on the coherence of poetry, which is especially featured in relegation poetry with the image more rich, profound, and hidden than other poetry. Relegation poetry, just as its name implies, is what the relegated officials depend on to describe their complicated feelings. The surface structure of such kind of poetry is confined to meter, the poets always omitting some words in the poems and hiding the cohesive links in the image.The article holds that image is the specific method of concept or conceptual structure created in the poetry coding by the poets. During the process of interpreting poetry, the coherence of poetry discourse mainly lies in readers'interpretation to the image. A further study on the cohesive function of image will surely deepen the cohesive study on poetry discourse, which works to provide the decoder with a psychological way for image interpretation and lay a thought foundation for exploring the cohesive links of relegation poetry.The article insists that in the Chinese-English text transition of relegation poetry discourse, interpreter from different cultural contexts will have different interpretations to the discourse cohesive links of image cohesion so as to produce different translation versions, requiring both sides familiar with the cultural context of target language to have a good command of discourse cohesion and to achieve the equivalence of discourse transition.With relegation poetry as the study object, the article will make a study on the image cohesion in relegation poetry to explore its cohesive function in the discourse coding of relegation poetry. Due to the rich artistic language of relegation poetry, this article plans to analyze the structure of poetry image from four aspects,"generosity","anger","grief"and"grudge", then it will survey the coherence of the discourse of relegation poetry.The thesis is composed of the following four parts:I. Literature Review This part will introduce the current Eastern and Western study on discourse cohesion and coherence and the significance of relegation poetry to the study of it.II. Image and Image CohesionThis part will make an analysis on the definition of image, how it come about, and it will define image cohesion and classify it.III. Cognitive Theory of Image CohesionIt will analyze the cognitive theory of image cohesion--- salience, and make a detailed introduction to the relationship between image cohesion theory and cognitive salience theory. With the former study of academic researchers on relegation poetry, it will raise the study on the discourse cohesion of relegation poetry in terms of image cohesion.IV. The Image Cohesion in Relegation PoetryIt will define the relegation poetry, classify it according to the emotion expressed by the poets in the poetry, and make a comprehensive analysis and study on it by applying the image cohesion theory. It points out that image is one of the inevitable cohesive methods in the discourse of relegation poetry, playing a critical role in the coherence of poetry discourse. And in the Chinese-English text transition, cultural context is the key for interpreting the cohesive links of image.
