New York's Successful Experience As A World Fashion Center For Beijing's Construction Of Fashion Capital

On 19th November, 2004, Beijing officially announced to promote Beijing's fashion industry and construct Beijing into a new world fashion capital in about 6 years. As we all knew that a world fashion center is not built in a day, so we need to learn the successful experience from the world-known fashion capitals. New York is one of the five world fashion cities and its success mainly resulted from its construction of fashion system, which can be divided into two parts, apparel industry and city cultural industry. Fashion designers and designers association can be seen as the link between these two industries. In this paper, firstly, the concept of fashion system was introduced; secondly the developing process and the characteristics of New York's fashion system were explored and its successful experience was summed up; thirdly a comparison was made between New York and Beijing in their fashion building; and finally Beijing's problems were analyzed and some suggestions were put forward for Beijing to speed up its construction of a new fashion capital.
