After western festivals'spreading into China, it was quickly accepted and loved by Chinese youngsters. Western festival's spreading into China largely depends not only on western prosperous economy and globalization but on its such characteristics as"fashion, entertainment, revelry, humanity etc.". The popularization of western festivals in China exerts a far-reaching influence on Chinese society, and this influence to some degree touches Chinese people's national feelings and cultural identity. In the face of the strong shock caused by western festival culture, the western"Christmas Day"and"Vanlentine's Day"which are most representative are employed to explore western festival phenomenon in modern China. The purpose of exploring this topic is to lead Chinese people to establish a kind of scientific and rational sense of festival culture and awaken them to recall the value of Chinese traditional festival, and finally enhance the national cohesion of Chinese people and promote cultural diversity in modern world.The thesis focuses on the western festival's spreading in China. The two theories of Cultural Change and Cultural Approval, coupled with the relative research approaches such as the method of Cross-cultural Comparison, the method of Psychological Analysis,the method of Questionnaire Investigation etc.are used in the paper. Firstly,"Christmas Day"and"Vanlentine's Day"are taken as examples to explore the spreading situation of western festivals in China. Secondly, the form of western festivals in China are analyzed from such three aspects as"Cultural acculturation","Cultural localization"and"Fashion". Thirdly, the reasons why the western festivals can become increasingly popular in modern China are studied, and the reasons mentioned in this thesis comprise globalization, the characteristics of Chinese culture, mass media and commercialization, the special features possessed by western festivals themselves. Finally, the positive and negative impacts they have had on Chinese society and how to deal with this phenomenon are explored.
