The purpose of teaching Chinese as a foreign language-also known as second language teaching-is to develop the foreign students'communicative ability. In order to make students master this communicative ability, we should not only put emphasis on the language teaching itself, but also add cultural factors to the teaching procedure. In the current situation of teaching Chinese as a foreign language, culture has been given more attention than before. However, there is still a lack of a system to guide and restrict the teaching. Besides, as the students all come from other countries where they speak non-Chinese, they surely will be affected by the cultural differences between their own country and target language country during the process of communication. In order to reduce the negative affect caused by this cultural difference, it's best for us to improve their cross-cultural awareness. Concentrating on the development of the students'cross-cultural awareness, this paper analyzes the principle, procedure, and the main problems of it. It also does some attempts and assumptions on the developing methods, strategies and specific steps in particular, and designs a specific scheme.
