A Study On TongYa·YanYuan

Recently, TongYa, written by Fang Yizhi who lived in Late Ming dynasty, has drawn increasing academic attentions. The scope of study about it has expanded to version, nature, publishing time, phonology, exegesis, philology, influence and so on.My paper will make a review about the situation of research first, and then choose the relatively weak YanYuan chapter as research object.We investigate thoroughly YanYuan mainly through the following methods. First of all, explain the necessary words in the text through The Dictionary of Chinese Character, The Grant Chinese Dictionary and other reference books. Secondly, have a re-entry retrieval research on entries mentioned in the origin of proverb through Si Bu Cong Kan, Si Ku Quan Shu and other relevant books. After this two-step, they can understand basically the meaning of each entry, then we compare it with modern linguistics.After exhaustive researching, we found that Yan is either different from Proverbs, nor the common sayings, and that "Yuan" means the Origin. Although due to the limitations of many aspects literature in many entries is not the first, it is needed to point out that Fang Yizhi thought have found out the origin subjectively. Knowing the meanings of Yan and Yuan, it is not difficuit for us to conlude the pattern of the entries in YanYuan.We summarized, at the same time, that there are a lot of errors in the chapter that includes 149 entries in all. Those errors have been corrected in text. In short, the paper selected YanYuan as the object of study, and I believe the conclusions would have a complementary meaning to comprehensive outstanding philology of Fang Yizhi.
