Psychological Perspective Of Translation Study

Different from the original translation study, which approaches texts from language structures and functions, research from the psychological perspective focuses on the process perspective. That means, the original translation research is only at the products level, and psychological research is at the process level. Translation is an activity involving many psychological problems, for this reason, if we study it only from products or languages level, we would constrain the development of translation study because of the unrecognized rules and unexplained phenomena.The present study, which is highly speculative but not subjective, could be considered as a cultivate research that makes use of the concrete theory—the combination of Freud's personality theory with translation process to handle practical problems. In order to justify our theory, we would like to illustrate the great Chinese translator—Fu Lei's three translated versions of"Le Père Goriot"as our examples.Firstly, the author introduces the background, the basic contents, the predicted problems as well as the theoretical and practical significances. And then, we have a general idea about the represented scholars who have done their utmost to the exploration of this field, such as Nida E.A, Kade O., Danks J.H. and Griffin J. and Roger T. Bell. Next, the author offers the methodology of the research. The chief and creative parts of this research lie in the fourth and fifth chapters. The fourth part firstly explores the dynamics of the translating process combined with Freud's id, ego, and superego theory and then introduces the information processing and its relationship with translation as well as some translation norms home and abroad that guide translator's translation. In the fifth chapter, Fu Lei's three painstaking translated versions of"Le Père Goriot"are borrowed to illustrate the embodiment of translator's psychological influence by his id, ego, and superego of different stages. We could obtain a thorough understanding of the translator's thinking trace and the relationship between Freud's theory and"Le Père Goriot"after making a contrast and analysis of these three translated versions from the lexical and syntactic angles. In the last part of this chapter, the author concludes her value and limitations of this case study. The last chapter is the concluding remarks, which summarizes the creations, limitations, and implications of the present research as well as suggestions for the further discussions.The chief theoretical significance of translation process in psychological study lies in the enrichment of theories and the enlargement of fields in translation study, as well as the revealing of the rules in translation process in essence. The practical significance is that the achievement helps offer a highly operational methodology for translation and benefits translators from making self-adjustments and properly handles the problems of the contradictions between understandings and expressions during translation process. Meanwhile, it helps provide a certain decision for translation authorities. What's more, it should be possible to make use of knowledge of the translation process in teaching activities.
