Application Of The Devices Of Lexical Cohesion In Journalism C-E Translation

Lexicons are combined into sentences and sentences into paragraphs. Lexical items, as the basic semantic elements of a text, are formed into lexical cohesion by a logical and structural network to reach a semantic coherence. According to Halliday, types of lexical cohesion including repetition, synonymy, antonymy, collocation, are classified into two categories:repetition and collocation. The former focuses on the choice of different manifestation of a meaning, and the latter refers to a compounding relation of lexical items appearing in the same context.Due to timeliness and vividness in characteristics in journalism lexicons, the toughest part in translation practices is semantic resolution of ambiguity patterns in source language and illustration by a proper choice of lexicons in the target language. Lexical cohesion is an efficacious tool to tackle this challenge. Firstly, no context, no meaning. The semanteme will be shown by the crossing point of the horizontal axis and the vertical axis, respectively, the context and the semantic component. In the theory of lexical cohesion, the horizontal axis will be regarded as the semantic relation of lexical items in a text. That is, ambiguity will be illuminated by the device of lexical cohesion of repetition and collocation. Secondly, a proper choice of lexicons will be based on the principle of a shared semantic coherence. Lexical cohesion manifests differing in form sometimes, but shares the same semantic coherence and logical consistency, a prerequisite for lexical choice to ensure united the theme and semantic field.The thesis, based on the principle of a united semantic logical coherence in source and target language, analyses how to apply the device of lexical cohesion in translation practice, including the semantic resolution and illustration. The thesis falls into three parts. The lexical cohesion theory will be introduced and simply analyzed at first. How to apply the device of lexical cohesion will be analyzed in the following parts.
