The production, distribution, subject matter and content of Han Dynasty portrait brick in Sichuan and Nanyang are researched in this paper. The artistic style and historical significance are studied in detail. Meanwhile, the great different contents in every period are found and the certain unity of the historical background and the Han culture are discovered in general.The emergence and development of portrait brick art of Han Dynasty in Sichuan reflect on its social. It is not only the inevitable development of the wall art but also the product of lavish burial. In content, there are daily life, music, dance, variety shows, architecture and mythology. The screen stands out from a flat surface by used of relief method and the lines are sketched out to expression the contents of a variety of content. The Han Dynasty portrait brick in Sichuan is mainly in the middle and late Han Dynasty and distributed in Chengdu Plain and its surrounding areas. As a tomb decoration and folk art, the production of portrait brick in Nanyang, Henan Province, is rooted in special political status, economic prosperity and the Han Dynasty burial ideas, wall art in Nanyan. The portrait brick in Nanyan region is the work from the late Western Han Dynasty to the late Eastern Han Dynasty, and they are mainly distributed in Xinye, Xichuan, Deng County, Tanghe County, Nanyang City County and other places. The main contents are social life, historical stories, different fairy spirit, design patterns, and so on. In the form of artistic expression, it is mainly in high relief, carved Yang Xian-based; combination of realism and exaggeration, classical realism and romanticism.The Han Dynasty portrait brick in Sichuan has many similarities to it in Nanyan, such as the production conditions, the sculpting technique, and content theme, artistic style. While there are obvious differences in popularity stage, shape, relief, composition, content, artistic and other specific aspects. The portrait brick in Nanyang is more abundant on the shape. The brick in Nanyang are hollow or solid, while solid in Sichuan. Light relief is used in Sichuan while high relief in Nanyan. The composition style in Nanyang is more and uniquer than it in Sichuan, such as long composition in Nanyan, which is not found in Sichuan. The contents of portrait brick in Sichuan are daily life, scene of labor production, construction art and they can more comprehensively reflect the manor economy, such as Sichuan unique silkworm, well salt, Silk Brocade and other cultures. The portrait brick in Nanyan embodies the life of merchant prince and the spirits, auspicious of thinking of Han Dynasty. Brick in Sichuan has a clear theme in the style, clean and smooth lines, rich emotion, and it is full of a romantic atmosphere. The brick in Nanyang is outstanding on the style of ancient art and the uninhibited expression of national character. The artistic level of portrait brick in Sichuan was significantly higher than in NanyangThe difference and contact of Han Dynasty portrait brick in Sichuan and Nanyang are reflected the regional characteristic of Central Plain culture and Sichuan Culture. The two cultures are important part of Chinese culture and it reflects development process of the diversity and unity of Chinese culture.
