Memorial archway, one spectacular scenery in the five-thousand-year history in China, is also called stereo living history and a world-known symbol of Chinese culture. Currently, people mainly focus their research findings with respect to memorial archways on buildings and arts, and involves inscriptions lately. Plenty of Ba and Shu Memorial Archways, featuring fundamental cultural values, are indispensable from the Chinese Memorial Archway. Preliminary research will be carried out in this text for chastity memorial archways and issues concerning woman who died for protecting her chastity from the aspect of folklore using precious data obtained by the tutor and the author in investigation in the recent 10 years.Taking into consideration of relevant chorography and field investigation materials, the text mainly researches current chastity and piety memorial archways in Ba and Shu Area from Ming and Qing Dynasties to the Republic of China. The text can be divided into the following three parts: the first chapter mainly introduces general information of chastity memorial archways in Ba and Shu Area and analyzes the women's status in the area from two special marriage systems which are recorded in inscriptions; the second chapter focuses on the evolution of chastity in Ba and Shu Area taking into consideration of relevant inscriptions and other related data from the point of folk custom, and tries to find out causes to and significance of chastity in the area. Moreover, chastity is also discussed taking into consideration of social reality; the third chapter digs out folk intensions, contents, and taboos with respect to chastity memorial archways from the point of folk psychology.
