Albert Schweitzer, the famous philosopher and ethicist of20th century, was knownas the founder of Modern Ecological Ethics. His ethical thought, i.e. reverence for life,is not only made great contributions to contemporary ethics, but also has widerimplications for western society.Reverence for life is the core of his ethical theory. The Good, according his theory,is to maintain life, to promote life. He affirmed that life is sacred, and stressed to respectand be reverence for all life. Human beings are responsible for all life. We should carryforward the activities of humanism, and do our best to give to life, because of theunlimited liability of other lives.I tried to comprehensively analyze the ethics of Schweitzer in this article, andexpound the background and origin and characteristics of his ethical thought. I alsosummarized its basic principles and requirements, and discussed its cultural role, as wellas its theoretical and practical meaning.
