"Science fiction has never been the mainstream literature, but wins more readersthan mainstream literature." Science fiction is a kind of literature which features strictlogic, cognition and exploration of science and technology. It complies with themodern innovation mode of science and technology. Therefore, with continuousdevelopment of human society, Science fiction has brought more and more attention. Most of the Science fiction writers earn doctor titles and explore the futureenergetically with the help of their sound knowledge of science. Perhaps having beenused to the thinking mode of laboratory, these doctors bring the strict logic thinkinginto literature unconsciously. Just so, Science fiction forms its unique charm andreveals the future of human and world in the eyes of senior intellectuals with reason.Isaac Asimov, an outstanding representative in American Science fiction'"goldenage", has been honored the Hugo Award and Nebula Award which are the mostsignificant awards for Science fiction. In1966, for the first time he won the HugoAward for Foundation Trilogy. This thesis, making use of Thomas N. Scortia's"Gedankenexperiment" theory, analyzes the artistic features of Foundation Trilogy andexplores its ideological root. Due to Science fiction's difference from traditionalliterature, this thesis focuses on the distinction of Foundation Trilogy and emphasizesthe world's future in the eyes of scientists. Through the analysis of this classic work, this thesis not only explores Asimov's attitude and view on the future of human societyled by science and technology, but also elaborates the author's efforts in balancingscience and literature. This thesis consists of three parts.Part one elaborates the relationship between literature and science briefly, andconfirms "Gedankenexperiment" as the theoretical support of this thesis. Althoughliterature differs from science in thinking mode, Scortia's "Gedankenexperiment"theory provides the possibility for literature and science's integration. Part two, making use of the "Gedankenexperiment" theory, works on the analysisof Foundation Trilogy's particularities. Thanks to his sound knowledge of science andskilled writing experience, Asimov seeks to balance scientific reason and literarypoetry in his works.Meanwhile, this thesis also analyzes the humanity exposed inFoundation Trilogy.Part three probes deeply into the foundation of Asimov's "Gedankenexperiment".This thesis holds that the reason why Foundation Trilogy is conformed to"Gedankenexperiment" theory is that it is closely related to the social environment inwhich Asimov was, Asimov's personality, the influence of The History of the Declineand Fall of the Roman Empire and American society and culture at then.
