Prefecture of Hedong (eastern part of Yellow River) military governor, which occupies a special position and has profound influence on the politics of Tang Dynasty, is an essential part for research of the governorship of outlying prefectures. Located in the northern frontier, the prefecture of Hedong military governor is surrounded by the Yellow River in the west, the Yinshan Mountain and desert in the north, Fenshui River and Mishui River in the south as well as Taihang Mountain in the east, which provide a natural defense for the Tang Empire. During Emperor Suzong of Tang to Emperor Xianzong of Tang, population in the prefecture of Hedong military governor declines sharply after An Shi Rebellion. With the wane of the empire's power, the imperial control towards Hedong area weakens for a short time compared with that before An Shi Rebellion. Consequently, the relationship between military governor and the imperial court changes with the comparison of the two's power. This thesis tries to employs the practical prefecture of Hedong military governor as research object in order to deeply explore the situation of this area at that time through economic, political and military aspects.This thesis is mainly divided into five parts:The first part will briefly introduce the prefecture of Hedong military governor. On one hand, the scope of the prefecture of Hedong military governor will be defined, that is, Taiyuan Fu, Fen Zhou, Mi Zhou, Yi Zhou, Lan Zhou, Shi Zhou, Qi Zhou, Dai Zhou, Wei Zhou, Suo Zhou and Yun Zhou etc.The second part will investigate the economic conditions of the prefecture of Hedong military governor. The production and operation conditions in this area during Emperor Suzong of Tang to Emperor Xianzong of Tang will be explored through agriculture, animal husbandry and handicraft industry ect.The third part will explore the role of the prefecture of Hedong military governor during Emperor Suzong of Tang to Emperor Xianzong of Tang. At that time, Hedong military governor plays an active role in suppressing the Rebellion as well as defending the Uighur and the governorship of outlying prefectures to the north of the Yellow River, which benefit from its long-standing military strategic position.The fourth part will investigate the relationship between Hedong military governor and its neighbor military governors. The author of this thesis will point out that Hedong military governor's relationship with Hezhong military governor and Zelu J military governor is as close as lips and teeth, but at the same time they restrict with each other. Hedong military governor, responsible for the defense of the principalities to the north of the Yellow River, is a defensive principality. Thus, it has a tense relationship with principalities to the north of the Yellow River.The fifth part will mainly analyze the relationship between Hedong military governor and central government of Tang Dynasty during Emperor Suzong of Tang to Emperor Xianzong of Tang. Firstly, employment conditions of military governor during this period will be listed by some examples. Secondly, according to Hedong military governor's attitude towards the central government of Tang during this time as well as the government's control over its prefectures, the author of this thesis will probe into the relationship between Hedong military governor and central government of Tang Dynasty, and finally draw a conclusion that Hedong military governor is respectful and submissive to the central government of Tang, and the government's control over Hedong military governor is also very effective.
