The Tang Dynasty represents the prime of the epitaph development in ancient China. Asthe same time material, Tang dynasty epitaph is very credible and important to the academicresearch in many fields. This thesis will take Collection of The Epitaph in Tang Dynasty andThe Continued Collection of The Epitaph in Tang Dynasty of Zhou Shaoliang, Zhao Chaoeditor as original scripts, and refer to Quan Tang Wen Bu Yi as circumstantial evidence. Withphilology theory being guidance, we will apply to the methods of radical analysis,summarized simulation, corroboration of literature and review of context meaning to researchvariant glyph of Tang dynasty epitaph in two aspects: on the one hand, from the studyprospective, we will discusse the complicated Chinese words from Suzong to Dezong period,which include not being interpreting words and interpreted words mistakenly; on the otherhand, from the collection prospective, we will investigate the representative variant glyph ofthe epitaph from Suzong to Dezong period extensively and compile them into “Tang DynastyEpitaph Variant Characters Table from Suzong to Dezong Period” orderly. This stepsummarize the type and writing revolution law of variant epitaphs from Suzong to Dezongperiod so as to study the variant Chinese characters better. This article contribute to sort andresearch about Tang dynasty epitaph and provide referential material for the furtherconsolidation of Modern Chinese study, as well as the compilation and revision of large-scaledictionary.Structurally, the paper is divided into four chapters. Chapter one is introduction, whichdescribes the object of study, research space, language study materials and research methods.Chapter two illustrates examples about complicated words study, including not beinginterpreting words and interpreted words mistakenly. Chapter three presents the meaning ofthis investigation, which elaborates the significance of the Tang dynasty epitaph research fromSuzong to Dezong period by citing examples. The last chapter is the conclusion, which summarizes the innovative points, achievements and the unsolved problems of this paper.
