According to register theory, in the process of translation, the register features of the source text should be reproduced in the target text. Since English and Chinese belong to different language system, there is a cultural difference between the two languages. Accordingly, when the translator tries to reproduce the register features in the source text, he should take into account conventions and the linguistic structures of the target text. This thesis tends to analyze the translation of characteristic dialogues in Lao Shaw's The Yellow Storm from the perspective of register analysis. The contrastive analysis based on the register theory is borne out in three aspects: field which illustrates the subject matter of the conversation between characters and motif the novel; tenor which reveals the characters and their relationships; though mode of the dialogue is already limited to speaking rather than writing, an analysis from the perspective of rhetorical concepts would be meaningful in proving its influence on the dialogue. With such a contrastive analysis and the related discussion of the translation strategies employed by the translator, the author of this thesis intends to prove that if the register equivalence between the target and source text is established, the translator text would maximally resemble the source text. |
