With the worldwide promotion of Teaching Chinese to Speakers of Other Languages (TCSOL), there is a surge in the number of people who learn Chinese as a second language. Consequently, teachers nowadays are facing considerable diversity in learners'proficiency levels, ages and motivations, and in order to attract diverse students, educators not only need to improve their Chinese teaching methods, but also have to pay attention to add some fun in the Chinese text materials. In recent years, the teaching beliefs of Affective filter hypothesis, Experiencing Teaching, Constructivism, and Self-determinism have received increasing emphasis in the field of TCSOL, and the interest of teaching materials therefore becomes a critical affective factor that influences language acquisition. Hence, more and more researchers start to focus on the study of the interest of Chinese teaching materials. However, current research findings are mainly achieved in the aspect of the interest of overall textbooks or textbook articles, yet the interest of exercise in teaching materials has not been fully discussed.Based on the aforementioned concern, this paper combines qualitative and quantitative research methods to study, analyze and compare the two Chinese teaching textbooks:Boy a Chinese and New Practical Chinese Reader. with the two English teaching materials: IMPACT and English in Mind. This study aims to1) conclude previous theoretical findings of Interesting teaching method, and try to promote a definition for the interest of language teaching and learning;2) propose several standards for the interest of text materials;3) compare the differences of the general settings, contents and forms of the interest. The specific research content includes comparing the embodiment of interest of1) modules settings;2) exercise forms;3) exercise contents between the Chinese teaching materials and the English ones.By comparing and analyzing teaching materials, this study also intends to provide some practical teaching-method suggestion by improving the interest of exercise in teaching materials. Firstly, the exercise should be spread into various sections, rather than be gathered and put into one separate section; Secondly, the forms of exercise should be diverse rather than onefold and repeating; Lastly, the content of the exercise should be strengthened on novelty and truth to make students highly motivated and attracted.This study further investigates some learners of Chinese to compare the differences between Chinese and English teaching materials, and eventually proposes some thoughts and conclusion about the interest of exercise setting in language teaching materials.
