On the basis of Lawrence Venuti's foreignization theory, this thesis probes into Lu Xun's translationthoughts at the initial stage of the20thcentury. Distinguished from the previous researches on Lu Xun'stranslation activities from the angle of ideology, this dissertation attempts to research the embodiment ofVenuti's foreignization theory in Lu Xun's translation thoughts from the perspective of social culture.Lu Xun's translation thoughts reflect the features of the initial stage of the20thcentury, because theyare closely related to the turbulent society, the slavish Chinese, the complex culture and other factors.Against the temporal social culture background, this thesis firstly analyzes the major causes of Lu Xun'stranslation thoughts and its development, as well as his westernizing proposal, which derives from histranslation thoughts. Then, by comparing Venuti's foreignization theory with Lu Xun's translation thoughtsthis thesis reveals the embodiment of Venuti's foreignization theory in Lu Xun's translation thoughts, andanalyzes Lu Xun's translation thoughts exert the promoting effects on Chinese social and cultural aspects.The findings demonstrate that the nationalism, the elitism, source texts selection and the foreignizingtranslation of Venuti's foreignization theory are respectively embodied in the four aspects of Lu Xun'stranslation thoughts, which include the translation motives and aims, the division of target readers, theselection of literary works from the insulted nations and the westernizing proposal.
