The Governance of China ?was published in November 2017 and translated by an English translation team organized by China Foreign Languages Publishing Administration. As shown in that book,a new down-to-earth language style was adopted, featuring adages, idioms, poems and figures of speech etc.,which are close to everyday language and strongly tied to the Chinese culture. However, those language forms of cultural associations pose a challenge to translators.Among those forms, the author of the thesis analyzes the translation of figures of speech in The Governance of China ?,with focus on metaphor, simile and synecdoche.Under the framework of Lawrence Venuti's foreignization theory, the author analyzes dozens of foreignizing and domesticating translation cases. In the foreignizing cases, the translators presented Chinese culture and highlighted Xi's discourse style by way of literal translation(or plus notes),transliteration, amplification etc.In the domesticating cases, the English texts seem fluent and highly readable without presenting any awkwardness, but they lose the Chinese characteristics in the source texts, thus plain but insipid. In the domesticating cases, the author believes foreignizing translation should be adopted, and she also comes up with her own versions to revise the original translation and make cultural differences more visible. In addition, the author interviewed an ABC foreign teacher who analyzed the pros and cons of the revisions. In conclusion, according to this thesis, figures of speech in The Governance of China ?(metaphor, simile and synecdoche)should be foreignized in translation so as to showcase the Chinese language and culture, shed light on the new political discourse, enrich the target language, and facilitate cultural diversity around the globe.
