Modification Of Lawrence Venuti's Foreignization-Centered View

Mo Yan has completed a raft of literature works which obtain extensive acceptance in the English world.Hereto,the English translator of his works,Howard Goldblatt,contributes a great share to Mo Yan's success.In terms of translation strategy,Lawrence Venuti highly regards foreignization-centered view,which sets off strong reaction and influence in the translation field.Compared with the �invisible� domestication translation strategy,as a key and pioneering figure of translation in foreignization,Venuti advocates to dig out the voice of marginal nations in translation by using foreignization strategy and highlight the �heterogeneity� of the translated text,which makes room for translators' �visibility�.At the same time,it dissolves and breaks down the centralism of Western countries through those suppressed marginal discourses,resisting Western hegemonism and building up an internationally justified culturalpolitical order.Objectively speaking,Venuti's foreignization translation strategy proceeds from the perspective of capacious national cultures by criticizing the Anglo-American cultural hegemony,bringing new perspectives for translations studies and calling forth translators' sense of moral and cultural mission.His foreignization-centered view is conducive to establish the cultural confidence of the marginal cultures and appeal to the values of respecting language and cultural diversity.However,the author upholds that,in translation practice,there exists certain space to modify Venuti's foreignizationcentered view.For instance,in the point of Goldblatt's domestication inclination in translating Mo Yan's literary works,Venuti's foreignization strategy not only lacks adequate persuasion,but also exists the degree of applicability issue.Hereto,the author selects Venuti's foreignization-centered view and Mo Yan's literary work��Life and Death Are Wearing Me Out,as the objectives of research.And this dissertation will be organized and demonstrated in the following three major aspects.First and foremost,this dissertation combs the overseas and domestic studies upon foreignization strategy as well as the core points and features of Venuti's foreignizationcentered view.On the basics of underscoring the reasonableness of foreignization strategy,the author summaries its positive influence and negative criticism.Therefrom,the author makes reflections upon translation strategies and combines these reflectionswith the example of Goldblatt's English translation for Life and Death Are Wearing Me Out,holding out the appeal of necessity in improving Venuti's foreignization strategy.In addition,this dissertation will further unite and integrate with Goldblatt's translation of the distinctive culture-loaded words in Life and Death Are Wearing Me Out.By analyzing and correlating the data of the translation strategies for the random cases of culture-loaded words in the source text,the author will find out and sum up Goldblatt's domestication inclination and his translation strategies in response to the limitations of Venuti's foreignization strategy.Finally,the author will present her modified suggestions and methodologies toward Venuti's foreignization-centered view.Namely,on the basics of Venuti's foreignizing spirit and the reasonableness of foreignizing principles,translators are expected to surmount the partiality and misleading risks of Venuti's foreignization-centered view in translation practice,decrease the over-emphasis on foreignization strategy and increase acknowledgement on domestication by allowing the involvement of domestication strategy in translation.Meantime,it is necessary for translators to maintain the flexibility,pluralism and inclusiveness of translation in practical translation works and skillfully select the methods of translation strategies,which brings in referential significance to the strategic project of promoting Chinese literature to �step abroad�under the background of cultural globalization.
