Chen Zengshou was born in 1878, the 4th year of Guangxu, and died in 1949, right before the foundation of China. He is a great poet after Chen Sanli and Zheng Xiaoxu in later Qing Dynasty, and he is good at both poetry and ci. Nowadays, most of the research of him is focused on his ci creation. Well little attention is paid to his poetry which has much more artistic value than his ci.This thesis considers that"Know a man, know his times first"and focuses on the life thoughts, poetics, content and style of Chen Zengshou and his poetry based on the previous study, to evaluate his place in Late Qing Dynasty poetry school in a comprehensive and objective way. The preface leads a general introduction of Chen Zengshou poetry study to academia from the view of Chen Zengshou's life thoughts, poetry creation and poem version. There are 4 chapters in total. The first chapter systematically shows Chen Zengshou's life and thoughts, tries to learn Chen Zengshou's thought track according to his experience. The second chapter systematically tells the origin source of Chen Zengshou's Poetics and poetry theory, basing on the characteristics of his poetry, that's absorb the merit of other poetry schools. For example, his acceptance of Tongguang style, Song Poetry, Tang Poetry and Tao Yuanming poetry. The third chapter puts emphasis on his poetry thoughts and takes some typical poems as example to show his complicated mentality in the poems, such as the landscape poetry, poetry chanting things, the dream describing poems and the presentable poems. The fourth chapter analyzes the art value of his poetry from the view of art character and proves his special influence in late Qing Dynasty.
