Geographical Indications (GIs) as a distinct intellectual property ruled by the TRIPS Agreement, protecting GIs is the obligation of WTO members. GIs originated from France, which is followed by other European countries and gradually extended over the world. Many international treaties are concerning with protection of GIs. Since GIs was included in the TRIPS Agreement, it becomes one of the most popular topics in WTO. Indication is a symbol of goods that decided by originating land's natural and human factors, which is the outcome of history. Therefore, GIs is the very important resources to implement of strategy of sustainable development.In this thesis, historical analysis, empirical analysis and comparative analysis etc. are used to analyse the relationship between EU's geographical indications and sustainable development. There are many successful experiences on the protection of GIs in EU, which provide new ideas to the local development, therefore, GIs can not only help to solve issues of agriculture, farmer of rural area, but also can promote the sustainable development in the region. The legislation of EU's GIs, as a quality policy of agricultural policies, by encouraging the diversification of agricultural production, realized the equilibrium of supply and demand, as well, increasing the income of farmers.This thesis is divided into four parts:The first part is the basic theory of sustainable development. Focus on the basic concept of sustainable development and its main contents, including the economic sustainable development, ecologically sustainable development and social sustainable development.The second part expounds the history of legal protection of geographical indications in EU. On the base of that, introducing the GIs legislation about wine, spirits,products and food.The third part is the relationship between sustainable development and geographical indications. From macroscopic perspective, analysis the relationship between sustainable development, the CAP and GIs; From microcosmic perspective, mainly analyzing two aspects:legislation and practice. On legislation, researching on the regulation of GIs, analyzing how to promote the sustainable development of economy, ecology and society; In practice, mainly introducing the EU's geographical indications products, this thesis choose French cognac as example, illustrating the geographical indications product plays an important role in promoting the economic, ecological and social sustainable development.The fourth part is taking example of the experience of EU, for promoting the sustainable development of China. This part focus on the success experiences of the protection of GIs in EU, promoting the sustainable development through perfect the related policies and regulations on geographical indications.In a word, European Union's GIs has realized the goals of sustainable development, China should learn from the experience of the European Union,and promote the sustainable development through perfect the relevant provisions of the geographical indications...
