China has been promoting the new curriculum reform of basic education and has developed new curriculum standards for all the subjects. As for English is concerned, the new curriculum standard is student-centered, focusing on fostering their ability of studying independently and developing positive emotional attitudes. It emphasizes the comprehensive development of the students' overall qualities. Such fresh and higher requirements will definitely cause changes in English teaching methods. Emerged in the 1970s, the cooperative learning approach is consistent with the spirit of the new curriculum standards. It helps students communicate and cooperate with their peers, in which process they are better motivated and the learning efficiency is also improved. Therefore, its influence has been improved significantly in recent years both in academic community and schools. This paper summarizes both foreign and domestic researches in this field and some personal experience and ideas. It explores the application of cooperative learning approach in English teaching practice of basic education from different perspectives under the new curriculum standards and the possible defects and errors in the application and tries to make some recommendations for improvement.First of all, this paper does a literature review of high school English teaching and cooperative learning approach under the new curriculum standards and describes the main content and spirit of the new curriculum standards and its implementation. It reviews and sums up both foreign and domestic research on cooperative learning. Then this paper studies the application of cooperative learning methods in secondary schools' English teaching practice under the new curriculum standards. It explores how to effectively use cooperative learning methods in secondary school's English teaching from four different aspects, which are speaking, reading, writing and grammar. Each aspect is started with a review of related theories and research results, and then analyzes the advantages of applying cooperative learning methods in this aspect of English teaching. Finally, there are the corresponding empirical researches. For speaking and writing, there is analysis of the effects of the cooperative learning practice or experiment. For reading and grammar, there are designs of the concrete implementation of cooperative learning methods catering to the teaching practice. At last, this paper reflects on the effects of cooperative learning methods' application in secondary school English teaching under the new curriculum standards. Based on the studies above, this part summarizes the strengths and weaknesses of cooperative learning approach, and raised related problems and correspondent solutions.
