The New English Curriculum for Full-Time Compulsory Education and Senior High School was advanced by the Chiiese Ministry of Education in July, 2001. This new curriculum represents recent developments in and draws on new findings from foreign language education. It has made a breakthrough by a bringing about a sweeping change in pedagogical rationale, curriculum targets and content, learning strategy, teaching method and evaluation. It has also carried the national curriculum reform upward into a fresh, new stage. Its new rationale and requirements not only provide good opportunities but also pose challenges to the teachers. This thesis , based on a survey of 126 Senior High School English teachers in Yanbian ,describes and analyzes the gap between the current proficiency state of the teachers and the requirements stated in the new curriculum. It confirms the great progress and achievements made in high school English education in Yanbian during the past 20 years and points out the necessity of confronting difficulties and improving the teachers' proficiency. It makes a detailed analysis of the root causes of the problems of conforming to the curriculum. Second, it proposes suggestions to both teachers and the local governmental administration on how to narrow the gap. This paper consists of three parts. The first part is an introduction in which the differences between the new curriculum and the traditional syllabus are listed, the developments of English syllabi for Chinese primary and elementary education are reviewed and the features and requirements are elaborated on.
