Vocabulary teaching is the key and tough part of English teaching and thus has always been focused on. However, the state of students'weakness in using vocabulary, especially in writing hasn't been improved effectively. Through literature survey and teaching practice, I find it's easier for students to associate more words with the unit theme and have a better master of the text. My hypothesis is that students'writing ability can be developed by optimizing the ways of input and output the unit theme vocabulary.The Unit Theme Vocabulary Teaching Approach(UTVTA), which integrates different modern vocabulary teaching methods and theories and is based on the idea of the whole language teaching, highlights the ways and frequency of inputting and outputting the theme vocabulary. In order to test the hypothesis, I carried out an experimental research, the objects of which are students from one of my classes, using another class which is similar in English learning achievements as the contrast one.In the research, the contrast class was generally taught in the traditional way while in the experimental class the UTVTA was applied. During the experiment, the students were asked to confirm the theme vocabulary, learn them in contexts and draw the vocabulary map and then use them in different situations when learning a text or other parts of a unit. Fun With English was used as the textbooks and the research lasted nearly two terms.On the basis of a detailed experimental design and a scientific data analysis, I arrive at the following conclusions:1. As far as the interview is concerned, the students of the experimental class think their learning motivation, interest and confidence have been greatly improved. They have developed the ability of teaching themselves and changed their ideas and strategies of learning vocabulary. They have formed the habit of learning vocabulary through the UTVTA.2. As far as the writing ability is concerned, the students of the experimental class do better in speaking and writing than the contrast class through the UTVTA and they have the ability to catch the key points and choose the theme vocabulary to organize their ideas before writing.3. The individual case study shows that the UTVTA has a better effect on improving the students at middle-level.According to the results of the research, I suggest the UTVTA can lead to improving students'writing ability by highlighting the theme vocabulary by confirming the theme vocabulary, learning them in contexts and drawing the vocabulary map and then using them in different situations when learning a text or other parts of a unit.
