The current English Curriculum Standard for Senior High School (draft) issued by the Ministry of Education in April, 2003 has pointed out a clear direction for English teaching in High School. English textbook for High School quickly diversified and various version of textbook emerged against this background, such as, textbook issued by People's Education Press, Beijing Normal University, Shanghai edition,Yilin edition and so on.In September,2005, Advance with English by Yilin Press has been officially used as the English textbook for High Schools in Hunan Province. The shift of textbook poses great pressure both on schools and teachers. By the end of College Entrance Examination in 2010, the textbook has undergone a complete trial. Whether the actual use of it meet the requirements of New Curriculum as well as the demands of teachers and students of Hunan still needs further investigations and analysis.This thesis analyzes and evaluates the textbook from the external as well as internal angles. With the introduction and textual analysis of its content and structure, proceeded with questionnaires and class observation over teachers and students of three different schools in Xiangtan, we've found that : students from different types of school hold different views on it; the satisfaction of students from model school is much higher than that of ordinary school and urban school;In addition,some parts of the textbook still need to be improved, such as ,"Welcome to the unit"lacks background information; new words are not reasonably presented,and no applicable guidance given in"Self-assessment".In order to make full use of it in actual teaching, its compilers are supposed to improve the deficiency; teachers improve their professional quality and fully absorb the concept of New Curriculum;students change the traditional passive way of learning and cultivate the habit of self-study;education authorities strive to set a new edcuation evaluation system accordingly.
