The UNESCO has issued a report "Learning to Be:the World of Education Today and Tomorrow ",in which the purpose of education is highlighted:i.e.to allow students to understand how to work,study,cooperate,and learn to be.Under such circumstances the present project is done on whether textbooks,as an important resource and tool in students' studies,are changing from "teaching materials" to "learning materials".The thesis is based on both theory and survey.To begin with,the thesis suggests the challenge of the conversion of textbooks and defines what a textbook is for teaching and learning.After finding out the principles on how to edit a student-centered book,the thesis then makes a systematic study of Advance With English in two aspects:text analysis and survey study.The text analysis includes design ideas,system,organization,contents and sequence while the survey study consists of questionnaire design and data analysis.Finally some constructive suggestions for editors and teachers are offered.
