With the rapid development of science and technology, a scientific and technological revolution is undergoing its flourish globally. Scientific innovation has been a strategic core for each country to seize the commanding point of economy, becoming an irresistible trend around the world. Colleges and universities have been playing an increasingly significant role in China's innovation system, with the consistent enhancement of innovative consciousness and capability, the continuous improvement of innovative level and mechanism, and the emergence of innovative achievement in China's institutions of higher education, especially those of high level research under the guide of a series of projects.The sound inner operation mechanism of the creative teams in universities guarantees an access to the full potentiality of the teams' innovation capability, effective improvement of scientific research, and the growth of subjects so as to gain a strategic commanding point in scientific and technological competition.With the innovative academic teams in universities being the study object, this paper will analyze the role of a sound inner operation mechanism in promoting the development of innovative teams in universities. Firstly, with the theoretical knowledge related to the operation mechanism of the innovative teams in universities as the theoretical support, it analyzes the various mechanisms constituting the operation mechanism of innovative teams in universities and their roles. Secondly, it makes a study on the relationships of various mechanisms. On the basis of life cycle theory, it divides the development of innovative teams in universities into four periods:formative period, growing period, mature period and degenerating period and it analyzes the characterizations of innovative teams respectively in each period through the theoretical study and interviews to team members. Finally, from the perspective of universities, it comes up with strategies about the balance between academic power and administrative power, the establishment of reasonable evaluation and motivation mechanism and talent recruitment. Universities should consolidate subject direction, strengthen the supervision on scientific research projects, advocate resource sharing and emphasize the fairness of distribution mechanism. A sound and ordered operation mechanism is the guarantee for the successful development of the whole team and the sustainable improvement of innovative teams so as to give full play to its performance.
