Vocabulary is one of the three basic elements and most sensitive part of language, and vocabulary learning is of great significance in language study. The English language has a large vocabulary which is in constant enlargement. To help the Chinese senior high school students keep pace with its development, the Senior High School English Curriculum Standards makes higher demands of vocabulary learning than ever before. However, there exit some problems concerning present vocabulary teaching, such as overstressing individual words, and even neglecting vocabulary teaching. Domestic studies on vocabulary teaching are far from systematic, which focus mainly on college students'language learning. Therefore, it is necessary to research on the current vocabulary teaching in Chinese senior high schools.A survey of the vocabulary teaching in six senior high schools in Changchun has been made, with the use of literature review, questionnaire and interview. The practices of vocabulary teaching are revealed so as to find more efficient teaching modes and strategies and improve vocabulary teaching in senior high schools. According to the survey, a large proportion of the teachers are aware of the importance of vocabulary, while some teachers are in lack of a thorough understanding of the new curriculum standards and unable to help their students with learning strategies. In this sense, high school teachers of English should have more awareness of vocabulary teaching strategies and better teaching modes, so that they can help students to form effective vocabulary learning methods and become independent vocabulary learners.This thesis contains five chapters:Chapter One is introduction, which addresses the background and current situation of vocabulary teaching at senior high school, as well as the significance of the study.Chapter Two is literature review, which discusses different theories and ideas of vocabulary teaching both at home and abroad.Chapter Three is research design, covering the aims of the study, subjects for the research, questions to be answered, and dimensions of the survey.Chapter Four is the analysis of the data which are obtained from the questionnaires and interview from the points of view of teachers.Chapter Five is conclusion, including major findings of the investigation, implications of the study, as well as its limitations.
