The new National English Curriculum Criteria advanced a much higher demand on vocabulary teaching, which was reflected in two aspects: the"quality"and"quantity". On the one hand, it demands the students master much more vocabulary, on the other hand, it advocates learning vocabulary from the aspect of use. That is, the demands toward vocabulary teaching are not only limited to recognition, remembering and understanding, it also lies in using and expressing. The purpose of vocabulary teaching is not just enlarging students'vocabulary size; it tries to improve the proficiency in using the known vocabulary as well.Recently, researchers begin to divert their attention to vocabulary teaching. The students in senior high school of rural area are the main force of the whole Chinese students, however, most of them are lack of scientific, efficient vocabulary learning and remembering strategies; simultaneously, the English teachers of senior high school in rural area only pay attention to the teaching of knowledge, but disregard the using of vocabulary teaching strategies. Thus, it has important significance to think highly of the teaching strategy research and to permeate scientific, efficient learning strategies in English teaching. On one hand, it can rise the students'learning efficiency; On the other hand, it can promote the teachers'teaching effectively. It may lessen students'and teachers'burden at the same time.The author made a survey about the vocabulary learning strategy in Qinglong No.1 High School. All the subjects were from 4 classes of Grade 1. The survey was conducted in the form of a questionnaire, it aimed at finding out the students'common problems in vocabulary learning; meanwhile, the author made an interview with ten English teachers of Grade 1 and tried to know more about the situation of vocabulary teaching strategy. As for the problems the survey reflected, the author chose two classes as the experimental group and the control group. Then from September, 2007 to December, the vocabulary teaching strategies were used in the experimental class.In the experiment, a pre-test at the beginning of the term and a post-test at the end of the term are conducted both in the experimental class and in the control class. The result suggests: the students who have been trained teaching strategies obviously can get a better result in the final examination. Software Microsoft Excels was used to collect and analyze the data.By the contrastive study, the research illustrates the significance of using the vocabulary teaching strategies and advances some constructive advice for the future research in this field.
